Thoughts on Tuesdsay!

1. The week has started out crummy but I am hopeful that it will end up sunny!

2. With scrapping this weekend, it will be fun to spend time with some good friends doing something crafty (i.e. scrapbooking our DC pictures!) will be just grand!

3. DH is the best guy I know...he brought home to best little daisy flowers, all bright purply-pink with bright green centers! (this layout one of elsie's 52 challenges..pretty much scraplifte because i loved it that much!)(for my scrapping, check here slices of life scrapbooking

4. I think my puppy knows I'm in a funk and because he is so smart he is putting on his really cute self. but, because it is spring his little allergies are acting up and his puppy paws are itchy.

5. We've had 3/3 yummy dinners this week: sesame seed baked chicken, honey-pecan pork chops, and baked potato soup.

6. I have a super cool opportunity tomorrow (wed 4/1): I get to be a part of the Legislative Reception at the state capitol for Department of Rehabilitation and Correction funded programs (me-pretrial release) and get to schmooze with the senators and representatives. I've been doing my homework and am ready to put my game face on! (ok, so not at this capitol! the ohio capitol but i like this pic from our vacay!)

What are you teaching your children?

While riding the metro in DC, a police officer on a bike entered and positioned himself near the door. My thoughts, he's probably coming off shift and getting back to the station to finish up.

A couple of mothers and their little girls (who were very cute I might add) got on as well. They sat near the door, across from the officer. Being the people watcher I am (and eavesdropper too, yes, guilty) I overheard the girl in purple ask her mom "what a police" is. The mom responded, "they take you to jail if you misbehave." The officer glanced down, and looked away quickly. (I'm sure he hears that a lot). The girl asked "why do they do that?" and the mom responded "when people are naughty they have to go to jail and the officer brings them there."

Period.

There was no mention of the GOOD police officers do.

What about keeping our roads safe by ticketing those who are breaking the law (again, guilty, just never caught). People grumble when they get a ticket, but just think, speed limits and traffic rules are there for a reason: public safety. If everyone did what they want and as fast as they wanted...the injuries and deaths would only increase!

What about teaching kids to say no to drugs. Okay, admittedly the DARE program has its flaws; however, who else is going to put the effects of using drugs and how students are first introduced to drugs? yes, parents do so but come on...sometimes learning from a different authority figure comes across stronger.

What about searching for lost children. How many times have you as a parent "freaked" out when your child was out in the neighborhood, unknown to you? What is one of your first thoughts....call the police.

What about being a visible presence in the community to deter criminal activity. How many of you avoid certain areas in your town because it's a "bad area?" I bet you've also seen cop cars and patrols there as well. What would your area be like without some routine patroling?

What about often being the first on the scene of an emmergency. Personal experience here: my brother had a seizure when he was 2, scariest thing I had ever seen. The first person on the scene was an officer. He helped my mom and I calm down and also got my brother ready for the ambulance. Then, as my mom rode with my brother to the hospital, he took me there too. Along the way we talked about what happened and what would happen at the hospital Being 10 years old, I still remember his kind words and how much he helped us that day.

What about community oriented policing that works directly with the residents and business owners in a collaborated effor to curb crime, enhance living, and crisis intervention among families. Sometimes the police sponser athletic leagues and social activities for at-risk kids. This allows everyone to see police as a necessary and not always bad face in the community.

I've wanted to be a police officer since I was in preschool when the teacher asked "what do you want to be when you grow up." I've changed a little since then, but I still work in the criminal justice system. yes, police are there to arrest those who do not obey the laws, they seek to prevent and detect crime, and maintain order. people who break the law should be held responsible.

to that point, telling your children that if they misbehave and are naughty the cop will bring him/her to jail is not the whole story. I only hope that family will also bring up the many, many good things police do for our communities.

now, don't even get me started on the media's effect on the vision people hold about police......

torn: 2 great causes...you pick!

First, I have a team in MN walking in this year's MS Walk on May 3. I've registered for the 2009 MS Walk because I want to DO SOMETHING for the people who have been diagnosed, including myself. It's not a selfish endeavor, I just want to do everything I can to prevent more people from learning what it means to live with this disease. Today, there is NO CURE for Multiple Sclerosis, and with a diagnosis occurring most frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability. My life with MS has been effected in many ways! I've struggled with depression and anxiety. I've had extreme difficulty sleeping, resulting in insomnia at night and fatigue during the day. I've had my share of trips, tumbles, and falls. I've had numbness and burning in my feet as a constant for over two years. I'm dealing with some cognitive symptoms now due to my forgetfullness and lack of concentration. Also, in September 2008 I developed Optic Neuritis and am still dealing with the effects of IV Steroids for 5 days! (no fun!)
The MS Society has always been there and supporters like you make all the difference!
Even though I'm now in Ohio, I have a team of supporters in Minnesota preparing to walk again this year! For donations to the MS Society, please go here today: Jana's Site.

Second, I am very excited to be a part of March for Babies with my local scrapbooking organization Columbusscrappers.org. CS has been supporting the March of Dimes for several years and we want 2009 to be our biggest donation year yet! Thats where you come in! Why March for Babies? Because the March of Dimes champions the needs of moms and babies in our community and across the nation. The money we raise for March for Babies will help:
- support all-important research offering preventions and solutions for babies born too soon or with birth defects
- educate women on things they can do to increase their chances of having a healthy baby
- provide comfort and information to families with a newborn in intensive care
- push for newborn screening and health insurance for all pregnant women and children

Won't you please help me in this worthy cause? Contributing to my walk online is fast, easy and secure. To donate today, please go here: Jana's Site.

See why I'm torn: two great causes and two great places you can make a difference! The choice is yours: 1 donation or 2, but really...how can you decide?!?!? Split the donation you'd give, support both and you've really done well! (and for bonus points in life, ask family and friends for their support too!)

Thanks!!! Look for update posts with pics and stats from the day!
